Free Electricity Hours, Coming to Australian Homes

November 5, 2025 11:55 am in by

Australians are set to receive three hours of free electricity every day under the new Solar Sharer program, designed to make better use of the nation’s strong solar energy and help ease cost-of-living pressures.

What Each State Will Receive

New South Wales:
Homes across NSW will be among the first to access the program. From July 2026, participating households will get up to three hours of free power during the middle of the day. The free period is expected to fall between late morning and early afternoon when solar supply is highest.

South Australia:
South Australians, already strong supporters of renewable energy, will also gain daily free power hours. The state’s high level of rooftop solar means many homes will benefit from lower bills and reduced grid pressure during the daytime.

South East Queensland:
Households in the south-east region, including Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and the Sunshine Coast, will receive the same offer as NSW and SA. They will need a smart meter and a participating energy plan to access the free hours.

Other states and territories are expected to join the program later, depending on how smoothly the first rollout goes.

How It Works

Even if you do not have rooftop solar panels, you can still take part. The key is to shift energy use to the free window. Running the dishwasher, washing clothes, or charging an electric vehicle during those hours can deliver real savings.
