An alarming safety alert has been issued across Australia. Several tubs of brightly coloured play sand and a popular sand castle building set sold at major retailers Kmart and Target have been urgently recalled after laboratory testing detected traces of ASBESTOS.

Asbestos is a prohibited and highly dangerous substance in Australia. If your child has been playing with any loose, coloured play sand purchased recently, you must take action immediately.

The Risk Factor: What Parents Need to Know

The products are being recalled because the sand may contain asbestos, which is a known carcinogen. The presence of this banned substance in a children’s product is the core reason for the recall.

The good news? Experts suggest the immediate risk of inhalation is low.

Important Safety Assessment:

  • The dangerous, airborne (respirable) asbestos fibres have not been detected in any of the tested samples while the sand is in its current state.
  • The release of these harmful fibres is considered unlikely unless the sand is processed by mechanical means, such as being crushed or pulverising (grinding).

However, due to the serious nature of asbestos, consumers are strongly advised to stop using these products immediately.

Action Plan: How to Get Your Refund

If you have any of the items listed above, follow these critical steps:

  1. Stop Use: Immediately remove the sand or sand set from your child’s possession and stop using it.
  2. Safe Disposal: Due to the asbestos traces, standard rubbish disposal is not advised. You must seek safe disposal advice from the Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency. This advice is available on the ACCC Product Safety website.
  3. Claim Your Refund: After safely disposing of the product, contact the retailer (Kmart or Target) to arrange a full refund.
