Whatever you call it, there’s a good chance you’ve used the game to settle an argument, decide who has to do something unpleasant, or simply prove once and for all that you are better than your mates.
The Game’s History
Rock Paper Scissors has been around for a VERY long time.
The earliest known ancestor dates back to ancient China, with records suggesting a similar hand game existed as far back as the Han Dynasty, more than 2,000 years ago.
The game eventually made its way to Japan, where it evolved into jan ken, the three-hand version we recognise today. From there, it spread around the world.
Not bad for a game that requires absolutely no equipment.
But What Do You Call It?
Here’s where things get interesting.
In Australia, Scissors, Paper, Rock is generally considered the most common order, while other versions include Rock, Paper, Scissors and Paper, Scissors, Rock. Honestly, the most important question of all might be:
How do you say it?
Because if someone says it in the wrong order, can you even trust their choice?
