Tassie’s Bird Flu Cases Rise to 10

Four cases of the H5 bird flu strain have been confirmed in Tasmania overnight, the total number of cases recorded now ten.

Samples from deceased birds discovered on King Island sent to the Animal Health Laboratories at Mount Pleasant for testing, which will now be sent to the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness in Geelong.

Incident Controller Wes Ford says two crested terns and two silver gulls were found at three locations on beaches and bays around Currie on King Island.

There have been no detections in Tasmanian poultry, chicken meat and eggs remain safe to eat.

Diseased birds have now been found at King Island, Burnie, Sulphur Creek and Rocky Cape – species infected including crested terns, silver gulls and a brown skua.
