Back in 2022, Edwin Castro was going about his day when he stopped at a local petrol station and picked up a lottery ticket. Turns out this ticket would change his life drastically as he had indeed secured a winning ticket. He claimed his winnings and agreed to take lump some of $997 million dollars, however after taxes he finished with a hefty $628 million dollars.
Shortly after claiming his money he spent some time investing it in real estate before eventually getting on to the fun such as new cars and holidays. But during the horrific LA fires, Castro was also victim and saw his home burn down. Since then, Castro has bought 15 lots of land that were affected by the fires and saw homes burned down, with the plan to rebuild these homes and then sell them for market value to people who need homes to live in and not people seeking to secure a rental property.
There are many residents who are vocally objecting to this with an online petition even being launched to prevent this. Some have jumped to Castro’s defence, as a local who was born in the area some would rather see this land rebuilt with the supervision and assistance of one of their own rather than a larger corporation, but many still protest the plans entirely and worry that it’ll result in the displacement of locals.
