There’s a blow for a contemporary jewellery exhibition due to open at Rosny’s Schoolhouse Gallery on Friday.
A key exhibit, an echidna-quill necklace, described as “priceless”, has been stolen.
Clarence City Council is working with Tasmania Police to try and track down the piece, which vanished after the exhibition bump-in on Tuesday night.
Mayor Brendan Blomeley piece was made by Aboriginal artist Aunty Jeannette James.
“Now, at great expense to ratepayers we’re having to further increase security, but we want to assure not only the artists but also the ratepayers that we will take all steps to ensure the safety of our art exhibitions,” he said.
“It can’t be sold, it needs a certificate of authenticity, it can’t be worn as it’s so distinctive, so I would urge anyone with information about this theft to please contact Crimestoppers.”
