A formal parliamentary apology has been issued to those who endured child sexual abuse in Tasmania’s institutions.
A Commission of Inquiry examined abuses including at the Launceston General Hospital and Ashley Youth Detention Centre and is yet to deliver its final report.
Premier Rockliff led the apology.
“It’s only by working together with a shared sense of purpose that we will make Tasmania a safer place for all, we are all accountable, we all take responsibility and we are all deeply, deeply sorry.”
Labor leader Rebecca White also addressed the parliament.
“We deeply regret these failings which have caused ernomous pain and suffering to children who should have been afforded the highest protection we can offer.”
Some survivors were in the public gallery in the lower house to witness the speeches.
