Gutwein not happy at AFL response

The state having its own AFL side seems further away, with the league deciding to set up a detailed, independent review into its merits.

Premier Peter Gutwein had issued an ultimatum to the league in the quest for a licence, putting negotiations with North Melbourne and Hawthorn on hold until a reply was received.

The AFL waited until about 5pm on Friday to respond to the Premier’s request for a timeline on a Tasmanian club.

Gillon McLachlan says he wants more time before making a decision.

The AFL says the review will be undertaken by an independent consultant and should be completed by late this year or early next when a "clearer picture" of the league's finances is known.

Premier Gutwein says "as a footballing heartland state, we have paid our dues and deserve much better".
