Some Brisbane arrivals free to leave isolation

coronavirus update

Anyone who arrived in Tasmania from Greater Brisbane prior to 9am on January 8th can now leave quarantine.

"...because they have not been identified as a close or casual contact of the [original] case," Health Minister Sarah Courtney said on Monday afternoon.

The changes come as the Queensland Government brings to an end a three-day lockdown in the Sunshine State's capital.

It came after a Brisbane hotel quarantine cleaner tested positive to the new more transmissable UK strain of coronavirus, but since then no cases have been detected there.

Director of Public Health Dr Mark Veitch said the announcement would be welcome news for "a few thousand people" who travelled to Tasmania from those 5 council areas last week and had to go straight into isolation.

Public Health has recommended quarantine arrangements remain in place for those who arrived in Tasmania from Brisbane after 9am on January 8, but these measures will be reviewed over the next 48 hours.

The Tasmanian Government says it will cover the cost of hotel quarantine for those who were "caught out" by the sudden boder changes announced on Friday.

There's about 600 people in the island state who have arrived from Greater Brisbane since January 8th who have to remain in isolaton for now

About 100 of those are in government hotel facilities.
