Whales marooned at Macquarie Harbour
A large pod of whales is stranded at Macquarie Harbour on Tasmania's West Coast.
A statement from the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment (DPIPWE) confirmed marine conservation experts are being deployed to the location.
The creatures, thought to be pilot whales, are believed to become trapped on a sandbar inside Macquarie Heads.
It's understood a number have died.
DPIPWE staff and Tasmania Police are on site and are managing the incident.
Additional crews with whale rescue gear are due to arrive later today.
"Marine experts will assess the scene and the situation and will provide updates as the day progresses," the statement said.
The exact species is yet to be confirmed.
