Billy's murderers jailed for 26 years

Last year's murder of Billy Ray Waters in Northern Tasmania has seen two teenagers sentenced to 26 years each in prison.

18-year-old William Adair Rothwell and 17-year-old Jacob Michael Brennan pleaded guilty to bashing, stabbing and shooting the 19-year-old over a drug dispute.

Screams and pleading were heard near bushland at Mayfield where the body was found in August last year.

The Launceston Supreme Court heard they were convinced the victim had stolen marijuana from them, and were told they would be given an ounce each for carrying out the killing.

Normally their youth status would prevent them from being named, but Judge Robert Pearce granted an exemption given the heinous nature of the crime and major public interest.

They'll be eligible for parole after serving 15 years behind bars.
