Clogged courts

Tasmania's courts are becoming increasingly bogged down.

While many other states and territories have recently lowered their pending cases, new Productivity Commission figures show Tasmania is blowing out.

Pending Supreme Court cases grew to 701 in 2018-19, seven years prior it was 330, demonstrating just how much the problem is growing.

Time settling many matters is also frequently dragging out.

Last financial year, 30% of criminal cases in the Supreme Courts took more than 12 months to be wrapped up.

Magistrates Courts had over 15% of cases unresolved after a year.
