Tasmanians stretch dollars further

Despite the economic pointers favouring Tasmania, local Christmas spending power is lower.

Retail research by Accenture finds Tasmanians on average will spend $587 this Christmas, a full $99 less than the national average.

55% of Tasmania's spend will be devoted to groceries, and unlike other retail sectors, online food shopping has not really taken off, with 81% of that food shopping done in-store.

Other national tidbits from the research include 44% of Australians reporting they are more likely to do their holiday shopping with a more environmentally conscious retailer.

As for online shopping, seven in ten shoppers (66%) research Amazon before looking or buying anywhere else.
