Beware $50 fakes

Check your pineapples, with Tasmania Police warning fake $50 notes are in circulation in the lead up to Christmas.

They have appeared in the Greater Hobart area and look at first glance like legal tender, but have noticeable Chinese characters printed on the sides.

Identical notes surfaced in Launceston in September and it is understood they were produced to train bank tellers in China.

In past cases, the same sort of $100 notes have previously circulated on the mainland, having been sold online with a disclaimer they are not to be used as real currency.
