Qld biggest jobless rate drop in country

Queensland has recorded the equal biggest unemployment drop in the country, with the seasonally adjusted rate falling by half a percentage point.

Jobs figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show Queensland's seasonally adjusted rate fell from 6.2 per cent to 5.7 in August, while the trend unemployment rate fell to 6 per cent from 6.1.

That equals 16,700 extra jobs according to the seasonally adjusted figure or 10,600 on trend.

South Australia recorded the same drop, from 6.2 per cent to 5.7 per cent seasonally adjusted, while recording a slightly larger trend drop from 6.3 per cent to 6.1 per cent.

The Labor government hailed the figures as the direct result of its jobs programs, with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk pointing out the government can claim to have created more than 100,000 jobs since coming to office in 2015.

"My government inherited a 6.6 per cent unemployment rate from failed treasurer Tim Nicholls," Ms Palaszczuk said in a statement.

"This is a clear line in the sand that we have shaken off the worst effects of the LNP's destructive policies to rebuild our state."

Ms Palaszczuk pointed to her government's Back to Work and Skilling Queenslanders for Work programs as key drivers of employment.

Earlier this year, the premier said she would be happy when the unemployment rate "had a 5 in it".

However, shadow treasurer Scott Emerson sounded a note of caution, saying the figures looked good on the surface but hid an overall softening of the state's jobs market.

"More than 80 per cent of the jobs that are being created in Queensland are part-time jobs," Mr Emerson said in a statement.

"We have tens of thousands more Queenslanders who are underemployed and aren't getting the working hours they want."

Mr Emerson said the state's youth unemployment rate of 13.5 per cent was the highest in the country.
