The university is also providing Tasmanian students with self-contained apartments where they can be isolated for 14 days.

In a letter to staff and students , UTAS vice-chancellor Professor Rufus Black said the university would provide online courses for the 1300 students in China who have been affected by the new travel arrangements.

He said colleges were working with staff to sort out online courses.

"All Chinese students who are in our accommodation are being provided with self-contained apartments to support their 14-day self-isolation period.

Professor Black urged staff and students to support members of the Chinese community.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced that the National Security Committee of Cabinet had acted on new information on the virus and introduce strict new travel restrictions and travel advice.

"Effective immediately, foreign nationals (excluding permanent residents) who are in mainland China from today forward, will not be allowed to enter Australia for 14 days from the time they have left or transited through mainland China," Mr Morrison said.

"Australian citizens and permanent residents will still be able to enter, as will their immediate family members (spouses, legal guardians or dependants only).
