AFL legend Schwatta regrets not asking for mental health help earlier

One in five Australians are affected by mental illness each year, yet due to the stigma surrounding these conditions, many people don’t seek the help they need.

For 12 years, AFL legend Wayne Schwass struggled with his mental health, afraid of what people would think if he spoke up.

No longer suffering in silence, and now in complete control of his life, 'Schwatta' has founded PukaUp, an organisation focusing on mental health, emotional well-being, and suicide prevention.

For World Mental Health Day today, 'Schwatta' opens up to Fairsy about his experience, encouraging others to reach out to those around them for support.

"I regret that I never brought those people into my conversations much earlier, because I'm absolutely convinced it would have helped my recovery," he says.
